The training roadmap
1. Instrument Aircraft Control & IFR Foundations
- Instrument scan, pitch, power, trim, and precise control
- Spatial disorientation, unusual attitudes, and partial-panel flight
- IFR clearances, communications, and cockpit organization
2. IFR Navigation & Enroute Operations
- VOR and GPS intercepting, tracking, and flight-plan management
- Low-enroute charts, routing, altitudes, and ATC procedures
- Holding entries, wind correction, and workload discipline
3. Instrument Approach Operations
- ILS, LPV, LNAV, and approaches with or without vertical guidance
- Approach briefings, arrivals, and course reversals
- Stabilized approaches, missed approaches, and mission management
4. Real-World IFR & Checkride Readiness
- Weather, alternates, fuel, risk, and cross-country planning
- ATC reroutes, equipment failures, workload, and automation management
- Mock oral, mock flight, refinement, and final recommendation
Real IFR mission training
Later lessons combine departure, enroute navigation, holding, approaches, missed approaches, diversions, and landing into complete missions. Changing conditions teach you when to continue, slow down, ask ATC for help, divert, or say “unable.”

Learn to program, verify, monitor, and intervene while preserving disciplined hand-flying skills. Automation becomes a workload tool—not a substitute for situational awareness.
Beyond the checkride
The course concludes with personal IFR minimums and a 12-month proficiency plan. The goal is not only to earn the rating, but to know which real-world IFR flights you are prepared to accept.
